If you have ever suffered from travel sickness you will know just how horrible and debilitating it can be. Happily, homeopathy can help!

Car-sickness, sea-sickness and air-sickness can affect any of us. If you are someone who finds traveling a ’sickening’ business, then there are several key remedies that you might want to take with you to make your journey easier.

1.Cocculus - This remedy a great personal favorite of mine, and whenever we go sailing I make sure I keep it close to hand in case conditions turn rough. It’s a great remedy for all forms of travel sickness, but especially for the rocking and rolling motion of a boat at sea. A key feature for anyone needing this remedy is feeling much worse from any sort of movement or even watching something else move!

2. Tabacum - This remedy is made from tobacco. Anyone needing this remedy may find themselves breaking out in cold clammy sweat and may feel giddy and lightheaded. They will usually feel better for being out in the open fresh air and for actually being sick.

3. Petroleum - With this remedy the person is made to feel sick or the nausea is made much worse if they catch a whiff of diesel or exhaust fumes. Typically the sort of sea sickness that can come on if you are traveling on a large ship in rough seas.

4. Ipecacuanha (Ipecac) -This is a fantastic remedy for all types of sickness. People needing this remedy often have a continuous feeling of nausea which is worse in the mornings. Any smell of food is likely to make things worse which also makes this an ideal remedy for the type morning sickness that can come with pregnancy. Like Tabacum, people who need this remedy tend to be much better for fresh air but in this case the nausea is not relived by actually being sick.

Whichever remedy you chose, it should be taken as soon as the first signs of travel sickness come on. Most of these remedies can be found in a good Homeopathic First Aid Kit and are best taken at the 30c strength with one tablet being be sucked every 15-30 minutes, until relief is felt. If the remedy has not helped after several doses, you probably need to select another remedy which matches your symptoms more closely, or consult your Homeopath who can prescribe a more specific remedy to take with you next time you travel.
